When Hypoglycemia Affects a Yorkie
Your usually hyper Yorkie pup has been moping around the house and not acting like his perky self. Could he be sick? Chances are, he could be suffering from low blood sugar. The Yorkie breed is highly susceptible to this condition, known in medical terms as Hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia develops when a dog's body does not produce enough glucose (sugar) to provide him with energy. It can be caused by stress, strenuous exercise, improper diet or a missed meal. For example, a puppy that doesn't eat for eight hours could suffer from a severe hypoglycemic episode because his body is not producing enough glucose. Without glucose, a Yorkie's body can stop functioning and sometimes even shut down, causing death.
